FREEZE

The Spice Road retail attraction at the Taj is heating up, but things are always cool at Freeze, Atlantic City’s only frozen cocktail bar. On March 30, Trump Taj Mahal introduced this one-of-a-kind bar offering an array of unique drinks including seven frozen specialty selections, domestic and imported beer, and wine.

Located directly between Burger, serving backyard barbecue classics, and Plates, an American café with a twist, Freeze is quickly becoming a favorite along Spice Road.

“Freeze was designated as an energy center to add to the excitement of Burger, and the ambiance, color and activity on Spice Road,” said Taj Mahal Public Relations Manager Mary Moyer. “Guests can enjoy their frozen drink on Spice Road, or take it with them as they take in their experience at the Taj Mahal.”

These aren’t your average frozen drinks, although traditional favorites such as daiquiris and margaritas do make the rotation. Freeze offers six alcoholic choices, changed weekly, as well as a non-alcoholic option that is switched daily.

Tired of the average cocktail mixers? The more daring drinkers can slurp down on Grape Crusher, Blue Island Freeze, Sour Apple Martini or Peachtini. Each flavor is made and stored in state-of-the-art, easy-to-clean five gallon machines costing $12,000 each, but Freeze isn’t limited to colorful beach drinks. It offers plenty of choices, from cocktails to a list of imported beers. Blue Moon, Sam Adams, Smithwick’s and Fire Rocky are among the imported names that stock the shelves. And for that “goes great with a burger” beer, Sierra Nevada also was added to complete the combination.

While the official holder of choice is yet to be determined, plastic cups are the current type being used to make it easy for the grab-and-go guests. According to the staff, however, approximately 50 percent of Freeze patrons stay to enjoy their frosty drinks. While the finishing touches are yet to be completed, one thing is for sure: the product has been tried-and-true.

“We did a lot of research and product testing. All our drinks are on a fresh fruit basis, so you will have fresh fruit pieces in all your drinks,” said Robert Grabowski, manager of restaurants at Taj Mahal. “One thing is for sure, there’s a lot of alcohol in them, almost an ounce and a quarter per drink.”

If the 20-ounce specialty drink itself isn’t enough, Freeze offers a test tube shot to be added to each frozen selection to give it an extra kick. For $5, patrons can top off their beverage with a shooter full of Absolut, Jose Cuervo Gold or Bacardi Silver.

The bar seating is limited to eight stools, with the surrounding tables for both Freeze and Burger patrons accommodating up to 60 guests. Still in the works: plasma television screens to be placed around the crescent-shaped bar.

Freeze is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 2 pm. on Fridays and Saturdays. Drink prices range from $2 to $8 and Taj Mahal comps are accepted.

Freeze allows you to make your own frozen drink.
