Where to find the ideal treat to cool off as the summer heats up

Frosty Favorites

Straying from the normal watering holes contained in our monthly Mixologist, this month features frozen treats the whole family can enjoy—ice cream and water ice, signature treats of the summer season.
In Atlantic City alone, you can find dozens of top-quality ice cream parlors with any flavor you can dream up. Chocolate chip, mint cream, peanut pecan, candy cane and rum raisin just scratch the surface of after-dinner treats available at the local custard and water ice shops.
Here are some great choices throughout the region.

Create-a-Cone , Tropicana
6 a.m.-midnight • 609-344-4949
Directly off the Boardwalk in Tropicana, guests can enjoy their frosty creations as early as 6 a.m. With homemade flavors made each day, Create-a-Cone sells 200 cones daily, which adds up to nearly 75,000 ice cream creations per year.
“They mix everything—mint, chocolate, peanut butter, Oreos and marshmallow,” says Owner Larry Rosoff. “One time, a customer actually wanted a donut mixed in with their flavor.”
Create-a-Cone can meet that request with Krispy Kreme donuts. If you prefer your donut without ice cream, donuts, muffins and coffee are stocked as a morning meal.
With more than 30 mixings, smoothies, milkshakes and sugar-free flavors available, Create-a-Cone rotates the ice cream flavors weekly, making choices and variety top priority.
The flavor of summer is peach, while the year-round kids’ favorite remains cake- batter ice cream with Reese’s peanut butter cups.

Cold Stone Creamery, 4215 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing
 11 a.m.-11 p.m. • 609-407-0111

Give your taste buds a thrill” is posted on the sign inside Cold Stone Creamery. This is no ordinary custard shop. Cold Stone Creamery offers the “ultimate ice cream experience” with custom creations, ice cream to go, cakes, sorbet and even healthy choices.
Instead of typical sizing, patrons have a choice of “Like It,” “Love It” and “Gotta Have It,” which range from $3.39 to $4.09. Straying from the average cone, Cold Stone Creamery offers chocolate-sprinkled waffle cones or cups along with 33 mixings including Twix, gummy bears, chocolate chips and an array of fruit toppings.
“We make every flavor on property daily, so it is a better taste and quality,” says General Manager Sabrina Cohen. “The real catch is that some people just like to be creative. Kids, especially, love to come in and make whatever they want.”
Cold Stone Creamery also has locations in Stone Harbor (seasonal only) and Vineland.

Stewart’s Root Beer 7801 Ventnor Avenue, Margate
11 a.m. to midnight • 609-823-6700

When people think of Stewart’s they think of hamburgers, fries and hot dogs, but the frosty goodies are the real treats. Open since 1937, Stewart’s Root Beer stand in Margate offers the traditional frozen yogurt, ice cream and water ice, but the best sellers are consistently milkshakes and root beer floats.
“It’s like two places in one, an ice cream parlor and restaurant with outdoor seating,” says owner Mark Asnis. “It’s just off the beach. No shoes or shirt needed here!”
Open seasonally from May through September, the corner stand doubles as a summer hangout for local kids and families. Stewart’s has seen generations of patrons, and serves more than 150 customers daily. The staff is friendly, and Stewart’s Root Beer (both regular and diet) is always on tap.
Locals and visitors alike know that summertime isn’t complete without a stop at Stewart’s.

Rita’s Water Ice, 1318 West Brigantine Ave., Brigantine
Noon-11 p.m. • 609-266-3500

Looking for some classic old fashioned water ice? Stop into any one of the 12 South Jersey Rita’s Water Ice locations from Sea Isle to Brigantine.
The bright red-and-white awning and smooth real-fruit Italian ice are signatures of Rita’s. Originally founded in 1984, Rita’s has perfected the summertime freeze in more than 30 flavors.
Made daily from fresh fruit, all Rita’s ices are fat-free and cholesterol-free. The Italian ice actually contains little chunks of fresh fruit—watermelon, cherry and lemon—in each serving.
“If there is an ice we make on a Monday, it is thrown away after 36 hours, so everything is always fresh. It makes the quality a step above,” says Barbara Behrens, owner of Rita’s Water Ice in Brigantine. “Also, new this year are sprinkles, hot fudge and caramel toppings.”
For dieters or diabetics, there are sugar-free flavors that change weekly. Thousands of patrons visit Rita’s on an average weekend, but surprisingly, the most popular order is now mango water ice, which surpassed cherry as the flavor of choice. Brigantine Rita’s offers four specials changing daily, including Cherry Pie A-la-Mode, Vanilla Mango Crunch, Tropicana Margarita and Banana Cream Pie.
At any Rita’s location, frequent buyers can get “Cool Cards” to get one free item for every 10 purchased.

Kohrs Bros. Frozen Custard Ocean City Boardwalk
10 a.m.-midnight • 609-399-6327

Nearly a century ago, the Kohrs family sold more than 18,000 custard cones in their opening weekend. Now, business booms with millions of cones sold each summer, with five Kohrs Bros. locations in Ocean City alone.
You can take your time licking the soft swirls. Kohrs custard uses eggs in the secret family recipe to keep the treat from melting while customers stroll the boardwalk.
