New Yorkers have known the intrigue of the Planet Rose club for years—a hot pink neon lounge offering karaoke and some of the best parties in the city. The Tropicana reprised the one-of-a-kind party atmosphere earlier this year with the opening of Planet Rose Atlantic City in the Quarter at Tropicana.
In mid-October, Planet Rose added some of the best sushi in town to the Planet Rose mix, with the opening of the adjacent Sushi Bar and Restaurant. The main attraction here is chef Tommy Tomoshige—known as "Tommy Sushi" from his days at Caesars' Temple Bar, a moniker earned not only by his flair for creating great sushi dishes, but for his enigmatic personality as well.
Customers can choose to dine at private tables, but we recommend bellying up to the new sushi bar to watch Tommy prepare your meal. Dishes range from traditional sushi (tuna, shrimp, sashimi) to new offerings such as the Planet Rose Roll, flounder seasoned with lemon, masago and cucumber; the Atlantic City roll, a salmon and ginger combination; or the Philadelphia roll, with salmon, avocado and Philadelphia cream cheese. There are 13 signature rolls in all.
Japanese beers and sake come with the meal.
The co-owner of Planet Rose is the restaurateur and creator of New York's famed Sushi Rose Restaurant, Sumio Sone. Sone recently praised the new sushi restaurant at the Quarter location as one of the best anywhere. "Being Japanese, I know good sushi and I know great sushi," he said. "It has always been my philosophy to serve customers nothing but the very best."
The Sushi Bar is open 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays; 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends—perfect for dining and then retiring next door to the lounge for signature Planet Rose fun.
Planet Rose is the perfect place to channel your inner lounge lizard. With leopard-skin upholstery and a lighted hot-pink bar, the place gives off a late-night New York vibe. It has colorful drinks that often couple quality liquor with fresh-squeezed fruit juices, like the Lush's Lemonade, Orgasmo, Dirty Rose and the popular Flirtini. The atmosphere extends into a glass-enclosed private room, which can be booked for parties.
But Planet Rose goes beyond your average bar beginning at 9 p.m. nightly, by making karaoke its main attraction—with you as the star.
With red drapes framing a stage area along the back wall, you will feel comfortable as you belt out your favorite Sinatra tune, or revisit hits from the ‘80s and ‘90s. Several large-screen TVs play videos with the words underneath while a state-of-the art sound system makes you sound better than you really are.
Don't be surprised if the patrons of Planet Rose join in a collective sing-along. The place fosters this type communal activity, and gives it a fun spirit. If music is the sound track to our lives, then Planet Rose is sure to offer the time of your life.
The opening of the sushi restaurant completes the experience of Planet Rose.
"Planet Rose has not changed its formula of cocktails and karaoke, but has enhanced it by adding sushi to its offerings," said co-owner Dave Pena. "What's more perfect than sipping a vodka martini, eating some delicious tuna rolls, and then going to a great party—all at the same place?"
