Spring Forward
From motorcycles to music, spring festivals are in the air
![]()
You may have forgotten what time of year it is, considering the blast of cold and snow that hit us during March, but spring really is in the air now, and nothing celebrates the beginning of spring more than area festivals.
It may not be the type of festival you’re thinking of, but for many, enjoying the warmer weather on the back of a Harley is definitely a sure sign of spring. That’s why the annual Atlantic City Motorcycle Showcase at the Atlantic City Convention Center is such a popular event. The show, hosted by E. Penn Biker Magazine, takes place on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15.
In addition to a display of new and custom motorcycles, the show will feature Michele Smith, from the Speed Channel’s American Thunder TV show, and Doug Keim of Creative Cycles in Wall, N.J., who was the recent winner in the Hard Rock Roadhouse custom bike build off.
There will be cash prizes and trophies given to bikes displayed at the show, and an extensive vendor area where attendees can see the newest biking supplies. Numerous motorcycle clubs will also be on hand.
Hours for the show are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 at the door. For more information, call 215-361-1433 or visit www.epennbiker.com.
If the smooth sounds of jazz, gospel and Dixieland are more your style, than head on down to the 27th Annual Cape May Jazz Festival, presented by Bank of America. The festival is held at locations throughout Cape May Friday, April 20 through Sunday, April 22.
This year, the festival will feature such notable jazz artists as Pat Martino, Terence Blanchard, Omar Sosa and the Charles Fambrough All Star Group.
Admission varies per event, and some shows are free of charge. For more information and a full schedule including pricing and times, call 609-884-7277 or visit www.capemayjazz.org.
Also in Cape May Friday, April 27 through Sunday, May 6 is the Cape May Spring Festival. The annual festival includes a week of tours and events against the backdrop of Victorian Cape May. Special events during this week include the Vintage Dance Weekend, with dance workshops and a vintage costume ball, house tours with the new Baker’s Dozen House Tour joining the popular Private Homes Tour, and many trolley tours.
For food lovers, there is the Chocolate Fantasy Buffet, sure to be as good as it sounds, along with Murder Mystery Dinners, the Winery Cellar Tour and Tasting, and chef’s dine-arounds. Add a Crafts Show and an Antique and Collectibles Show, and there is definitely something for everyone.
The Cape May Spring Festival is sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts, Comcast and the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May. For more information, call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278, extension 185, or visit www.capemaymac.org.
And now for something completely different. It’s the 22nd year for the annual Doo Dah Parade in Ocean City. This year, the parade starts at 12 noon on Saturday, April 21. The parade groups will march along Asbury Avenue from 6th to 12th Streets and finish at the Ocean City Music Pier on the boardwalk.
Who would pass up a chance to enjoy the special Dog Dah division? In the past it has featured over 300 basset hounds, from clubs as far away as Missouri. Of course, you never know what you’re going to get with the Doo Dah Parade. It’s open to any individual or group who wants to participate. Past groups have included the beach chair drill team, bed roller brigade, hobo brigade, live bands and impersonators of legendary comedians.
There is no fee to participate in the parade, but groups must register with the public relations office. For more information, call 609-525-9300.
In nearby Somers Point, it’s time for the popular 19th annual Bayfest on Saturday, April 28. Bayfest features more than 120 crafters, 38 food vendors, 15 children activities, five live musical bands, environmental exhibits, bicycle giveaways, and a sand sculpture.
Bayfest is held along Bay Avenue in the historic bayfront area of Somers Point. The hours for the event are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. For more information, visit www.somerspointbayfest.com.
This is just touching on all the events and activities taking place in the Atlantic City region in April. For a complete list of entertainment, visit www.atlanticcitynj.com and click on the calendar of events.
