There is no more “off-season” in Atlantic City

by Michael Bruckler

Always On

Like any other New Jersey seaside resort, wintertime in Atlantic City and the surrounding area used to be considered the “off-season.” Well, those days are over. While other towns are waiting for the tourist season to begin, Atlantic City’s has never ended.

The conventions and public shows offered in the Atlantic City Convention Center can be credited with some of that change. After 12 years at the Fort Washington, Pennsylvania Expo Center, Motorsports 2007 moves to Atlantic City Friday, January 12 through Sunday, January 14.

Motorsports 2007 offers a mix of more than 600 manufacturer booths and a speedway, 250 racing vehicles, collectibles and interactive displays. And for you big-time fans, there will be plenty of opportunities to obtain free autographs from some of motorsports’ biggest stars, including Denny Hamlin, 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup “Rookie of the Year.”

Hours of Motorsports 2007 are Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The midwinter motor sports event coincides with the popular Atlantic City Indoor Midget Car Racing, which returns to Boardwalk Hall on Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13 for the 5th Annual Gambler’s Classic presented by Len Sammons Motorsports Productions. The indoor auto race features Three Quarter Midgets and 600 Sprints as the headliners. The competition starts at 7:45 p.m. on Friday and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, visit www.aarn.com, call (609) 888-3618, or visit www.boardwalkhall.com.

Also at the convention center, the 28th annual Atlantic City International Power Boat Show returns Wednesday, January 31 through Sunday, February 4. Open to the public, the show features more than 700 powerboats by leading manufacturers and dealers. It will showcase all-new 2007 models of motor and express yachts; and sport fisherman, cruiser and sport boats. Luxury motor yachts up to 65 feet long will be on display.

Additionally, a “Marine Marketplace” will feature accessories, information and marine-related services, including the latest advances in navigational devices, engines, financial/insurance services, nautical gifts and apparel.

Show hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (212) 984-7000 or visit www.atlanticcityboatshow.com.

But it’s not just the convention center and Boardwalk Hall that keep the events coming year-round. Many of the city’s attractions and venues offer unique entertainment all year long.

It’s not like you need an excuse to visit the Absecon Lighthouse at 31 South Rhode Island Avenue in Atlantic City, but when they’re hosting their 150th Birthday Celebration on Monday, January 15, how could you miss it? The festivities begin at 2 p.m., including characters from 1857, stories of the lighthouse, a birthday cake and presents for “dear old Abbey,” as some have nicknamed her. There also will be t-shirts featuring the winning design from a local Atlantic City student competition.

During the event, there will be a raffle for a catered dinner for six by a five-star chef. Dinner will be at the Absecon Lighthouse while dessert will be served up top, 171 feet in the air. For more information, call (609) 449-1360 or visit www.abseconlighthouse.org.

Just like Atlantic City, the Stockton Performing Arts Center doesn’t slow down in January. On Thursday, January 18, Rick Miller performs in Bigger Than Jesus, a sacrilegious, irreverent, funny and thought-provoking show. The next day, Rick Miller returns in MacHomer, a one-man vocal spectacular featuring impressions of 60 voices from TV’s The Simpsons in a hilarious performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Then, the Bay-Atlantic Symphony Showcase is scheduled for Sunday, January 21. On Thursday, January 25, L.A. Theatre Works presents Noel Coward’s Private Lives featuring Amy Pietz and Raphael Sbarge. And finishing off January, the Bulgarian National Opera presents The Marriage of Figaro on Wednesday, January 31.
